One of my altered pulp fiction covers themed around writing and editing. The original book is Junkie, credited to William Lee but actually written by William S. Burroughs based on his personal experiences of heroin addiction. (You can read Will Self's insightful piece about the book and its original cover here.) Junkie (or Junky, as Burroughs originally spelled it and as it typically appeared in British editions) was Burroughs' first novel written solo, but he had previously written a manuscript entitled And the Hippos Were Boiled in Their Tanks with Jack Kerouac. Which latter fact has nothing to do with my post here; I just think And the Hippos Were Boiled in Their Tanks is a book title for the ages.
