I made these digital collages for my dear friend Dorothy Hudson's birthday. The fish are from various antique books about sea life available through the Biodiversity Heritage Library's amazing collection, which can be viewed on Flickr as well as on the BHL website. I love the personality, colors, and strangeness of the fish in these old engravings, which often seem too wonderfully odd to be true. For some reason I can't explain, a few splendid specimens seemed to want to float in the skies of the Komentenbuch, a 1587 collection of heavenly wonders. The final element in each piece is a page of old ephemera, just because the combination of fish and comets wasn't already weird enough.
This pair ended up being called Verlaine and Rimbaud.
